The investigation of nature is an infinite pasture-ground
where all may graze, and where the more bite, the longer the grass
grows, the sweeter is its flavor, and the more it nourishes.
The
whole visible universe is but a storehouse of images and signs to which
the imagination will give a relative place and value; it is a sort of pasture which the imagination must digest and transform.
The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
The herdsman comes to the pasture
lands - what good are his ostentatious displays here? When your
allotted time is up, you must go. Take care of your real hearth and
home.
Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture,
but you must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and
to have drunk of the deep waters, but you must foul the residue with
your feet? And as for my flock, they eat that which you have trodden
with your feet; and they drink that which you have fouled with your feet.
